Tradition for Buddhist Monk Robes was develop over 2500 years ago by Lord Buddha from Gridkhutta Mountain.
While standing on top of the Gridkhutta Mountain, looking down at the rice patties, Lord Buddha instructed Ananda to make robes with pattern of patches similar to the Magadha rice fields. Disciples of Buddha are to be reminded to cultivate good virtues for planting Bodhi seeds, bringing forth the Bodhi minds toward the ultimate of Enlightenment, similar to the rice grains thriving in well-drained soil with good nutrients.
Buddha's ancient method of dyeing cloths salvaged from cremation ground for monks robes is a way to help Buddha's disciples to realize the impermanence of life, to observe and accept the phenomena of nature with coloured dye obtained from tree barks, plant roots, fruits, flowers, leaves, turmeric which give the cloth a yellow-orange color. This color brings the symbolic of illumination to end births, death, rebirths or Samsara with The Light of Wisdom dispelling the darkness of ignorance in this world, and guide other spiritual followers toward the Path of Enlightenment.
